- Failure to Provide a Safe, Appropriate Pain Management Plan of Care for a Resident Who Requires Those Services – citation #F697 date February 8, 2019
The state investigators determined that the nursing home “failed to ensure that pain management and assessment were provided to residents who require such services, consistent with the comprehensive person-centered Care Plan, and the resident’s goals and preferences.”
The investigative team observed the resident “in her room, in bed, with the head of the bed elevated. The resident’s wheelchair was seated next to the bed. The call light was within reach.”
While the resident did not exhibit physical signs of extreme pain, she “verbalized chronic pain related to back issues, which left her with paralysis.” The resident stated during an interview that they had come to the facility “due to being evacuated from the facility in Panama City. She stated she had been on pain management medication for years [before] this.”
The resident stated that “when she came to Tallahassee, she was seen by the facility Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner [who had told her] that everyone from Panama City is stoned and addicted to opioids and that she is not in chronic pain.”
The resident indicated that she did use to take a certain medication for years and now the Advance Registered Nurse Practitioner “bumped her medication down the Tylenol 3 and told her she was an addict. She said since then, she cannot even try to walk or participate in therapy to move her leg, and her chronic back pain has increased. The resident stated she had prior back surgery and has rods in her back and fused vertebrae.”
The resident told the surveyors that “she asked for a pain management consultation and advise that the medication was not effective.” However, the Nurse Practitioner “repeatedly told her that she could leave the facility if she does not like it.”
