Southern California Senior Demographics

San Diego is commonly known as the birthplace of California and was founded after Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo landed in the San Diego bay. The city is now the seat of San Diego County and has strong ties to medical research and biotechnology in addition to the defense, tourism, and trade industries. Its economic and cultural diversity has helped its population grow to nearly 1.4 million. Over 10% of this population is 65 years of age or older, and another 7% is between the ages of 55 and 64.

To serve the needs of its growing senior population, the city's Park and Recreation Department runs nine senior centers throughout the city. Seniors can gather and socialize at any of these centers and participate in dances, trips and special events that include art contests, talent shows, and craft sales. For more information about the activities offered through the city's Senior Services, you can call (619) 236-6905 or visit the Senior Services website to locate a senior center near you.

Southern California Assisted Living Homes

To look up specific information for the facility your loved one is located at, or when considering placing a loved one in a facility, you can access the Nursing Home Compare tool at medicare.gov. The facilities we've focused on below have received demerits for failing to provide quality care and should be avoided if possible. If you need assistance removing your loved one from an unhealthy environment, we are more than happy to help.

Information on California Nursing Home Abuse & Negligence Lawsuits

Our attorneys have compiled data from settlements and jury verdicts across California to give you an idea as to how cases are valued. In 2020, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid found that thirteen (15%) of the eighty-seven nursing facilities in and around San Diego provided their residents' substandard care.

To manage public health, Medicare releases publicly available information every month on all care facilities in San Diego based on the data gathered through inspections, investigations, and surveys. Federal investigators found that six (10%) of the fifty-eight San Diego nursing facilities had serious deficiencies and violations that resulted in the nursing staff providing substandard care.

This alarming statistic reveals the problems associated with the nursing home industry throughout neighboring areas, including El Cajon, Orange County, and Chula Vista. Our law firm posts the CMS ranking of government-run facilities, for-profit homes, and private non-profits around Southern California below:

When to Do If You Suspect Abuse

Nursing home abuse and neglect take on many forms, which is why our San Diego County elder abuse lawyers suggest that you investigate whenever you have a reasonable suspicion that home residents are being mistreated. Many of the victims of abuse never come forward for fear of retaliation or because their residential care facilities abusers have verbally threatened them. One of the most definite signs that things are not right is when you go to visit your loved one, and his or her behavior takes on sudden changes.

Other warning signs of home abuse or neglect include the following:

  • Hospitalization due to infections, medication errors , dehydration , or malnutrition. An infection can signal inadequate sanitation measures while medication errors, dehydration, and malnutrition are all indications that the facility's staff is not trained correctly or unable to keep up with the needs of patients.
  • The presence of bed sores , which develop over long periods of neglect. The prevention of these painful sores is as simple as moving a patient every several hours to allow the blood to circulate to areas that are cut off when he or she remains in the same position for an extended period,
  • Physical marks on your loved one's wrists or ankles that may suggest he or she has been restrained,
  • Social isolation where staff members deny the patient access to family, friends, religious outings, facility events, activities, and support groups,
  • Financial abuse by the theft of the older adult's social security check, personal belongings, medical care card, or prescription drugs,
  • Failure to provide a safe environment that led to elders’ sexual abuse,
  • Hip fracture, traumatic brain injury, or knee injuries that might indicate falls due to a lack of patient care supervision,
  • Staff members violation privacy policy (HIPAA) laws by exposing the patient's medical records and personal information,
  • Home neglect that led to exposure to the deadly COVID-19 virus.
  • Your loved one experiences outbursts of anger or depression. He/she may also begin to get quiet whenever a caregiver is present.
  • Wrongful death caused by a severe preventable injury, bed sores, physical abuse, not accommodating a disability, decubitus ulcers, home negligence or avoidable common injuries

★★★★★
Jonathan did a great job helping my family navigate through a lengthy lawsuit involving my grandmother's death in a nursing home. Through every step of the case, Jonathan kept my family informed of the progression of the case. Although our case eventually settled at a mediation, I really was impressed at how well prepared Jonathan was to take the case to trial. Lisa

After I read Jonathan’s Nursing Home Blog, I decided to hire him to look into my wife’s treatment at a local nursing home. Jonathan did a great job explaining the process and the laws that apply to nursing homes. I immediately felt at ease and was glad to have him on my side. Though the lawsuit process was at times frustrating, Jonathan reassured me, particularly at my deposition. I really felt like Jonathan cared about my wife’s best interests, and I think that came across to the lawyers for the nursing home. Eric
