The state investigators determined that the nursing home “failed to protect [the resident] from abuse. This failure resulted in [a resident] feeling angry and embarrassed.”
The facility abuse investigation concerning the incident shows that a cognitively intact resident alleged that a moderately, cognitively impaired resident “touched her inappropriately while riding on the bus to church.” The form indicates that the church provides transportation for the residents.
The reporting resident answered the surveyor’s questions saying that “she could not believe she had to retell the story again.” The female resident stated that “she was riding on the bus to church when [the other resident] started to unzip her jacket and then fondled her breast and chest area.”
The female resident stated that the alleged perpetrator “then grabbed her hand and placed it in his crotch.” The female resident said that “she told the people at church and then when she got back to the facility, she told [the activity lady] and [the nurse] what had happened.” The resident stated that “she felt very angry and embarrassed by what happened.”
The facility “failed to prevent [a resident] from being verbally abused.” The resident stated that a staff member “told me I was a liar and faking.” The staff member “said she should call a religious-based long-term home I wanted to transfer to and tell them I was a liar and faker.”
The staff member “made innuendos that I would let a gay male staff person perform mouth-to-mouth on me and not any of the current female staff. I do not approve of homosexuality. Then, [the staff member] took me down the hallway to the TV room with my feet dragging the whole time and turned backward so I could not see where we were headed. These comments made me feel disgusted and embarrassed.”
