When to Contact an Attorney if You Suspect Abuse

Nursing home abuse and neglect takes on many forms, which is why our San Diego nursing home injury lawyers suggest that you conduct an investigation whenever you have a reasonable suspicion that your loved one is being mistreated. Many of the victims of abuse never come forward for fear of retaliation or because their abusers have verbally threatened them. One of the clearest signs that things are not right is when you go to visit your loved one and his or her behavior takes on sudden changes. Other indicators of abuse or neglect include the following.

  • Hospitalization due to infections, medication errors, dehydration or malnutrition. An infection can signal poor sanitation measures while medication errors, dehydration and malnutrition are all indications that the facility’s staff is not trained properly or unable to keep up with the needs of patients.
  • Physical marks on your loved ones wrists or ankles that may suggest he or she has been restrained.
  • Your loved one experiences outbursts of anger or depression. He or she may also begin to get quiet whenever a caregiver is present.
  • The presence of bedsores, which develop over long periods of neglect. The prevention of these painful sores is as simple as moving a patient every several hours to allow the blood to circulate to areas that are cut off when he or she remains in the same position for an extended period.

★★★★★
Jonathan did a great job helping my family navigate through a lengthy lawsuit involving my grandmother's death in a nursing home. Through every step of the case, Jonathan kept my family informed of the progression of the case. Although our case eventually settled at a mediation, I really was impressed at how well prepared Jonathan was to take the case to trial. Lisa

After I read Jonathan’s Nursing Home Blog, I decided to hire him to look into my wife’s treatment at a local nursing home. Jonathan did a great job explaining the process and the laws that apply to nursing homes. I immediately felt at ease and was glad to have him on my side. Though the lawsuit process was at times frustrating, Jonathan reassured me, particularly at my deposition. I really felt like Jonathan cared about my wife’s best interests, and I think that came across to the lawyers for the nursing home. Eric
