Wired-In Seniors Represent Growing Demographic On Internet

grandma using InternetIt was too long ago that I recall my grandparents at me with amazement as I pulled a Sony Walkman of the wrapping paper on my 13th birthday. At the time, the concept of a mobile music player was quite a novelty. But I guess more than that, the concept of usable, everyday technology– that could arguable embellish the quality of life– was quite new. By now, I imagine that my Walkman is peacibly rotting away at the bottom of a landfill somewhere. Today mobile music devices have become so universally accepted they rarely get any any stares from folks– old or young. The strides our society has made when it comes to universally implementing technology over the past 25-years is really amazing (yes, for those keeping score, I am 38) considering how intertwined computers, phones and of course the Internet has become in our existance. While many aspects of technological get immediately consumed by younger people, I was really impressed to read Kevin O’Keefe’s blog, “Half of US adults over 65 are now online : Golden demographic for lawyers” As a legal marketing guru, Kevin’s article does a nice job motivating lawyers with niche practices commonly used by seniors to take heed of the fact that more of them are on the Internet. Citing an Mashable article by Samantha Murthy, an astonishing 70% of people over 65, use the Internet on a daily basis. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that 34% of that demographic use social media sites like Facebook and Twtter as part of their on-line routines. As someone fascinated by all aspect of the Internet, I first must offer a hearty welcome to the online world. Secondly, I must warn you that your newfound technology can be additive! However, from a legal marketing perspective, I’m really not going to do anything differently. While there will always be those whom are indeed looking to appeal to a certain demographic and prepare their content and sites in a specific way, I think seniors are smart enough to locate the best information for their need be it on-line or off. But of course, don’t be shy about saying ‘hi’ to me
