Extendicare Nursing Homes

For over 40 years, Extendicare has built its network of nursing homes and assisted living care into one of the largest of its kind in North America. With a total of over 244 facilities in Canada and in the U.S., they have over 26,000 residents in their care. While primarily specializing in nursing care and assisted living, they also have other types of care facilities as well.

Locations

In the U.S., Extendicare is its own indirect wholly owned subsidiary of the Canadian born company. Under the name Extendicare Health Services, Inc. (EHSI), they operate 160 senior care facilities in the U.S. with over 15,000 available beds. They have facilities in 12 states including Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The majority of nursing homes are in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Medicare Inspections

With such a large network, EHSI should be well versed in what is expected from a Medicare/Medicaid facility. Unfortunately, many of their locations are well below par. Their Beaver Falls Location in Pennsylvania has the lowest rating, 1 star, in their overall, quality and staffing ratings, with 2 stars in their health rating. Meadowcrest, Abington Crest and Belair nursing homes in PA are among the others in the state alone that have 2 or less star overall ratings.

Services

Extendicare offers a variety of inpatient care and a small amount of outpatient services. Although the majority of their homes are long-term care or nursing home facilities, they also have:

  • Assisted Living/Retirement Communities
  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Services
  • Outpatient Rehabilitation Services

Lawsuits

Extendicare has had its share of lawsuits in the last few years. There have been two class action suits in Washington and Minnesota over their misleading advertising campaigns, promising services that they do not deliver. In the summer of 2012, Extendicare announced that it was leasing its 21 facilities in Kentucky due to excessive lawsuits in that state.

Client Reviews

  • Having worked in the medical field, I appreciated the way that Mr. Rosenfeld and his staff approached my family’s situation. The combination of medical knowledge and legal expertise was indeed the winning combination for our case.
    ★★★★★
  • While nothing can change the way our mother was treated at a nursing facility, I do feel a sense of vindication that the facility was forced to pay for their treatment. I am certain that they would never have done had my attorneys not held their feet to the fire.
    ★★★★★
  • I was very nervous about initiating a claim against my mother’s nursing facility, but Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers took care of everything from getting the medical records to going to court. I felt like I had real advocates on my side. That meant a lot to me.
    ★★★★★
  • After a horrific episode at a nursing home, my sister and I spoke to a number of law firms. No one took the time to answer our questions and explain the legal process like Mr. Rosenfeld. He did a tremendous job on our case and I can see why he’s earned the praise he has from clients and peers.
    ★★★★★
  • I liked the fact that I could call the office and ask questions about the legal process at anytime. I could tell that my case was in good hands. I think that this was reflected in my father’s settlement was more than I anticipated the case ever being worth.
